jeevesbond writes “Back in October of 2007 we discussed a bug that would dramatically shorten the life of laptops using Ubuntu. Ubuntu users will be glad to know that a fix has finally been released for Ubuntu versions 9.04, 8.10 and 8.04 (LTS). However, as this fix is not yet in the update repositories, anyone wishing to test it should follow these instructions for enabling the ‘proposed’ repository. Report your results on the original bug report. Happy testing!”

PC Sales Slump Over Economic Crisis
nandemoari writes “The damage isn’t just limited to the United States. Shipments of PCs in Europe, the Mid-East, and Africa dipped to records posted around the turn of the century. It was even worse in Asia, which according to Gartner, posted its worst growth rate ever — just 1.8 per cent. Within the industry, desktops took the hardest hit, as was expected. Sales of non-portable computers were down about 16 per cent as consumers opted instead for the rising ‘netbook’ and similar hybrids. That fact alone is troubling for PC makers, given that 0-0 netbooks offer a far lower profit margin than more expensive and more powerful laptops and desktops.”

How Do You Manage Your SD Card Library?
txmadman writes “Like a lot of my colleagues and all of my three children, I have several SD , mini-SD, and micro-SD cards for various purposes: cameras, cell phones, my laptop, etc. These things are handy to have around, offer easy and significant storage, but are very easily lost. We have also have run into some instances where it wasn’t clear whose SD card was whose, and have also started to see a need for a storage mechanism. I have seen SD card ‘wallets’ and such, but have never seen anyone actually use one. So: How do you manage and keep track of your SD cards?”
