Ian Lamont writes “A Microsoft-sponsored report that describes a hidden “Apple tax” has fallen flat among the technology press. Roger Kay’s report (PDF) compares various PC and Mac configurations, and claims an all-Apple household’s costs would add up to an extra ,367 over five years. Tech columnists and bloggers have slammed the comparisons and claims made in the report — even Mac-baiter John C. Dvorak calls it propaganda. However, some Mac fans still see a pro-Microsoft press conspiracy. Even if the comparisons are questionable, Kay’s report and the accompanying television ads have clearly struck a nerve among the Mac faithful.” Meanwhile Linux users everywhere are scratching their heads.

KindMind writes “CNet has pictures of a planned 10,000 year clock to be built in eastern Nevada by the Long Now Foundation. From the article: ‘Running under its own power, the clock is an experiment in art, science, and engineering. The six dials on the face of this machine will represent the year, century, horizons, sun position, lunar phase, and the stars of the night sky over a 10,000-year period. Likely to span multiple generations and evolutions in culture, the thinking and design put into the monument makes it a moving sculpture as beautiful as it is complex.’ This was reviewed on Slashdot in 2005. Really cool pictures, including one of a mechanical ‘binary computer’ that converts the pendulum into positions on the dial.”

Jamie noticed the news that Google Update is now Open Source. The article acknowledges the privacy and security concerns of an application that is always running in the background of your machine, and authorized to install new software. And Google made the logically obvious conclusion that releasing the source code would alleviate those concerns.

An anonymous reader writes “Tuesday saw elections for school boards and city officials throughout Kansas. In Saline, ES&S voting machines in several locations were ‘mis-calibrated,’ and when the voter touched next to one candidate’s name, the ‘x’ appeared next to another one. One person I talked to said he tried to vote three times before going to the 80-something-year-old election worker, who told him ‘It was doing that earlier, but I thought I fixed it.’ From the story in today’s Salina Journal: ‘The iVotronic machines used in Saline County are sold by Elections Systems and Software. In October, the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law notified 16 secretaries of state, including Kansas Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh, that the machines are known to record votes to the wrong candidate.’ The county does calibrate the machines the day before each election, but, ‘… in conversations with ES&S on Thursday, [the county clerk] was told that the calibration might change during the day. “What they’ve seen is calibration drift on a unit,” Merriman said. “They’re fine in the morning, but by afternoon they’re starting to lose their calibration.”‘ There was also coverage of the problems when they occurred two days ago.”

Odelia Lee writes with a full review of Dell’s new Adamo slimtop over at Gizmodo. While it may have an sleek exterior there are definite gaps (both literal and figurative) in their engineering. “The Adamo is both a compliment and an insult to Dell engineering. It’s possibly the most beautiful computer Dell has ever manufactured, but I’m not sure that Dell has caught up to competitors in either aesthetics or power. There have been lots of qualitative Adamo reviews out there, but we got the first of the units that will actually ship to customers, so it’s time for real benchmarks. As it happens, performance is really what’s at stake here.”

Microsoft’s latest installment in its popular series of ripped-from-the-headlines, real-America style ‘puter buying adventures follows a mom and son duo — Lisa and Jackson. They almost buy a Mac, but Lisa notes they’re “popular at this age” (we guess what she meant to say is that they’re for children).
