YouTube Users Lash Out At Warner Music

Two things are clear in the YouTube/Warner Music scuffle. First, neither side is 100% right. And second, users are very, very angry that their videos are being pulled down or muted when they contain background music owned by Warner Music.

After Monty Python Goes YouTube, Big Jump In DVD Sales

An anonymous reader writes “Apparently it with the release of all of Monty Python’s material on YouTube, their sales have blown through the roof on Amazon.com. It is too bad there isn’t any proper news article about this, but I think it bodes well for those who champion free content. More importantly, it forces the MPAA’s feet into their mouths.” Not every performer (or group of performers) has the decades-strong appeal of Monty Python, but this is a great thing to see. The linked article claims that the sales increase in the Python DVDs is 23,000 percent; there are probably some other ways to figure the numbers, but a big increase is easy to see.

YouTube To Allow Self-Serve Ads For Major Media Players

thefickler writes to tell us that YouTube plans on raising revenue by allowing major media players to run their own ads on the video site for, not only their own content, but illegally uploaded content by other users. “The site says CBS is already on board for the scheme, with other giants expected to join. The scheme will allow TV, movie and music companies to upload content and then sell advertising themselves, for example through images or animations which are overlaid on suitable sections of the clips. YouTube will then take a cut of this advertising revenue.”

White House Exempts YouTube From Web Privacy Rules

An anonymous reader writes “The new White House website privacy policy promises that the site will not use long-term tracking cookies, complying with a decade old rule prohibiting such user tracking by federal agencies. However, Obama’s legal team has quietly exempted YouTube from this rule. Visitors to the official White House blog will receive long-term tracking cookies whenever they surf to a web-page with an embedded YouTube video — even those users that do not click the “play” button. As CNET reports, no other company has been singled out and rewarded with such a waiver.”

YouTube Muting, Removing Videos Involving Warner Music

notseamus writes “In the past few days, YouTube has started muting videos uploaded by users that use ‘unauthorized copyrighted music’ in response to Warner Music’s threat over royalties, and so far appears to target only Warner Music related videos. Ars Technica also reports that after three DCMA notices YouTube will remove a user account, even when it appears to be fair use. Kevin Lee has had video essays — which he believes are fair use — removed from YouTube, and his account disabled before he could file a counter notice.”
