NYPD Wants to Jam Cell Phones During Terror Attack

The New York Police Department wants to be able to shut down cell phones, in case of a terrorist attack. In testimony today before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said he wanted to take out that “formidable capacity to adjust tactics while attacks are underway.”

A lot of the world’s e-waste is exported to Guiyu, China, where peasants heat circuit boards over coal fires to recover lead (a 15″ computer monitor can pack up to 7 lbs. of Pb), while others use acid to burn off bits of gold. Guiyu’s willingness to deal with lead, mercury and other toxic materials generates million a year for the village, but as a result. Guiyu is slowly poisoning itself with the highest level of cancer-causing dioxins in the world. The village experiences elevated rates of miscarriages, and its children suffer from an extremely high rate of lead poisoning. TIME suggests checking out recycling brokers and accredited e-stewards the next time you’re ready to toss a gizmo.”

How Do You Manage Your SD Card Library?

txmadman writes “Like a lot of my colleagues and all of my three children, I have several SD , mini-SD, and micro-SD cards for various purposes: cameras, cell phones, my laptop, etc. These things are handy to have around, offer easy and significant storage, but are very easily lost. We have also have run into some instances where it wasn’t clear whose SD card was whose, and have also started to see a need for a storage mechanism. I have seen SD card ‘wallets’ and such, but have never seen anyone actually use one. So: How do you manage and keep track of your SD cards?”
