Microsoft suit over FAT patents could open OSS Pandora’s Box

Microsoft has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against TomTom alleging that the device maker’s products, including some that are Linux-based, infringe on patents related to Microsoft’s FAT32 filesystem. Are Windows 7 Testers Going Unheard?

nandemoari writes “Windows 7 beta testers are disputing whether or not Microsoft’s is taking notice of their feedback. The dispute follows a blog post by Steven Sinofsky, the man in charge of engineering Windows 7. He notes that in one week in January Microsoft received data through Windows 7’s automatic feedback system every 15 seconds. According to Sinofsky, it’s impossible to keep everyone happy. That’s partly because there are only so many changes Microsoft can make to the system and still finish it, and partly because in many cases testers often have opposing views about a feature.”

Microsoft To Start Shipping Windows 7 In September 2009

Microsoft could have Windows 7 on shipping PCs by September, Compal president Ray Chen said today at an investor’s conference. The PC contractor executive understands from plans that the software should be available in either late September or early October.

US Antitrust Judge Examining Windows 7 Documents

Anonymous writes “After more than 11 years, the US antitrust case involving Microsoft is still alive, with a federal judge overseeing enforcement of provisions under which the software giant must operate. And now, Judge Kollar-Kotelly says she’ll take a close look at new technical documents involving Windows 7. This case began during the Windows 95 era.”

Has Microsoft’s Patent War Against Linux Begun?

Glyn Moody writes “Microsoft has filed a suit against TomTom, ‘alleging that the in-car navigation company’s devices violate eight of its patents — including three that relate to TomTom’s implementation of the Linux kernel.’ What’s interesting is that the intellectual property lawyer behind the move, Horacio Gutierrez, has just been promoted to the rank of corporate vice president at Microsoft. Is this his way of announcing that he intends going on the attack against Linux?”
