supermehra writes “How do you move 300 desktops, locked down with Windows ADS Group Policies (GPO), over to Ubuntu desktop? We have tried Centrify, Likewise, Gnome Gconf, and the like. Of course, we evaluated SuSe Desktop Enterprise and RedHat Desktop. Samba 4.0 promises the server side, however nothing for desktop lockdown. And while gnome gconf does offer promise, no real tools for remotely managing 300 desktops running gnome + gconf exist. All the options listed above are expensive, in fact so expensive that it’s cheaper to leave M$ on! So while we’ve figured out the Office suite, email client, browser, VPN, drawing tools, and pretty much everything else, there seems to be no reasonable, open source alternative to locking down Linux terminals to comply with company policies. We’re not looking for kiosk mode — we’re looking for IT policy enforcement across the enterprise. Any ideas ladies & gentlemen?”

David Gerard writes “iPhone development sounds closed-shop but simple — apply to be a developer, put application on the App Store, you and Apple make money. Except Apple can’t keep up with the request load — whereas getting a developer contract used to take a couple of days, it’s now taking months. Some early developers’ contracts are expiring with no notice of renewal options. And Apple has no idea what’s going on or the state of things. If you want to maintain a completely closed system, it helps if you can actually keep up with it.” Reader h11:6 points out news of a recent study which suggests that “Android’s open source nature will give it a boost over Apple’s iPhone,” and thus take the lead in sales as soon as three years from now. It will be interesting to see how they deal with the flood of proposed apps as their popularity rises.

“open source” – has been confined to software through such brilliant communal projects as Wikipedia, the Firefox browser (which now has 21.5% of the global market) or the Linux operating system. Interestingly, such products don’t appear in the figures for gross domestic product (GDP)…

An anonymous reader writes “A small software company is claiming that Red Hat’s JBoss open source middleware violates one of its patents and is asking a court to stop Red Hat from distributing the product. Software Tree LLC claims that JBoss infringes on its database patent for ‘exchanging data and commands between an object oriented system and a relational system.’ Software Tree’s partners include Microsoft, and that the suit was filed in Eastern Texas, which is known as a plaintiff’s paradise for patent actions.”

Yes, that’s right. Mozilla. For those who wonder how software could have anything to do with politics, well, you haven’t been around open-source software long enough.

An anonymous reader writes “Companies using software other than Microsoft’s are unable to bid at many Portuguese public tenders. This is due to the use of Silverlight 2.0 technology by the company, Vortal, contracted to build the e-procurement portal. This situation has triggered a complaint to the European Commission by the Portuguese Open Source Business Association; the case is unofficially known in Portugal as ‘Vortalgate.'”

An anonymous reader writes “PlayingWithWire profiles two open source tools for Web development, comparing Joomla! and WordPress through the lens of usability. The article has apparently upset a few people at the Joomla! forum, but it does bring up a good point. Many open source projects are developed by engineers for engineers — should they focus more on usability? PlayingWithWire makes a bold analogy: ‘If Joomla! is Linux, then WordPress is Mac OS X. WordPress might offer only 90% of the features of Joomla!, but in most cases WordPress is both easier to use and faster to get up and running.'” The article repeatedly stresses that blogging platform WordPress and CMS harness Joomla! occupy different levels of the content hierarchy. How fair is it to twit Joomla! on usability?
