FCC asked to investigate Skype for iPhone restriction

Since Tuesday, Skype for iPhone has been downloaded more than a million times—that’s a rate of six downloads a second, according to the company. All this despite the fact the software only works via the iPhone’s Wi-Fi connection, and not AT&T’s 3G network. That restriction has angered some, who have argued that the practice is anti-competitive.

Group Pushes FCC To Investigate Skype for iPhone

Macworld is reporting that an internet advocacy group has asked the FCC to investigate whether the WiFi-only restriction on the Skype for iPhone app is in violation of federal law. “Since its release on Tuesday, Skype for iPhone has been downloaded more than a million times — that’s a rate of six downloads a second, according to the company. All this despite the fact the software only works via the iPhone’s Wi-Fi connection, and not AT&T’s 3G network. […] The letter cites the FCC’s Internet Policy Statement (PDF link) which states that ‘consumers are entitled to run applications and use services of their choice’ in order to ‘preserve and promote the open and interconnected nature of the public Internet.'”

Microsoft Asks Fed For Bailout

snydeq writes “Microsoft requested on Tuesday some billion in bailout funds from the federal government, claiming that as the company controls an overwhelming share of the OS market, it is too big to fail. Low adoption rates for Vista, the ensuing ad campaign trying to convince people that they really do like Vista, and the increased need for development resources to rush Windows 7 to market to make people forget about Vista have necessitated the bailout, the company said. “We want to make it absolutely clear that this is not a crisis of mismanagement,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in a prepared statement. “This is simply a crisis of dollars — a crisis of not having enough dollars coming our way.””

Mozilla First To Patch Pwn2Own Browser Vulnerability

Constantine the Less writes “Mozilla has released Firefox 3.0.8 to fix a pair of code execution holes that put users of the browser at risk of drive-by download attacks. It includes a fix for one of the flaws exploited during this year’s CanSecWest Pwn2Own hacker contest. The update also fixes a separate zero-day flaw disclosed earlier this week on a public exploit site. Both issues are rated ‘critical,’ Mozilla’s highest severity rating.”

New Speed Record Set For Wind-Powered Vehicles

Hugh Pickens writes “Richard Jenkins reached 126.1mph in his Greenbird car on the dry plains of Ivanpah Lake in Nevada, setting a new world land speed record for a wind-powered vehicle. ‘It’s great; it’s one of those things that you spend so long trying to do and when it actually happens, it’s almost too easy,’ says Jenkins. The Greenbird is a carbon fiber composite vehicle that uses wind (and nothing else) for power. The designers describe it as a ‘very high performance sailboat,’ but one that uses a solid wing, rather than a sail, to generate movement. Due to the shape of the craft, especially at such high speeds, the wings also provide lift; a useful trait for an aircraft, but very hazardous for a car. To compensate for this, the designers have added small wings to ‘stick’ the car to the ground, in the same way Formula 1 cars do. ‘Greenbird weighs 600kg when it’s standing still,’ says Jenkins. ‘But at speed, the effect of the wings make her weigh just over a ton.’ Jenkins has also built a wind-powered craft that travels on ice, rather than land. ‘Now that we’ve broken the record, I’m going back on to the ice craft. There’s still some debate as to whether traveling on ice or land will be faster.'”
