Larrabee ISA Revealed

David Greene writes “Intel has released information on Larrabee’s ISA. Far more than an instruction set for graphics, Larrabee’s ISA provides x86 users with a vector architecture reminiscent of the top supercomputers of the late 1990s and early 2000s. ‘… Intel has also been applying additional transistors in a different way — by adding more cores. This approach has the great advantage that, given software that can parallelize across many such cores, performance can scale nearly linearly as more and more cores get packed onto chips in the future. Larrabee takes this approach to its logical conclusion, with lots of power-efficient in-order cores clocked at the power/performance sweet spot. Furthermore, these cores are optimized for running not single-threaded scalar code, but rather multiple threads of streaming vector code, with both the threads and the vector units further extending the benefits of parallelization.’ Things are going to get interesting.”

Robot Makes Scientific Discovery (Mostly) On Its Own

Hugh Pickens writes “A science-savvy robot called Adam has successfully developed and tested its first scientific hypothesis, discovering that certain genes in baker’s yeast code for specific enzymes which encourage biochemical reactions in yeast, then ran an experiment with its lab hardware to test its predictions, and analyzed the results, all without human intervention. Adam was equipped with a database on genes that are known to be present in bacteria, mice and people, so it knew roughly where it should search in the genetic material for the lysine gene in baker’s yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Ross King, a computer scientist and biologist at Aberystwyth University, first created a computer that could generate hypotheses and perform experiments five years ago. ‘This is one of the first systems to get [artificial intelligence] to try and control laboratory automation,’ King says. ‘[Current robots] tend to do one thing or a sequence of things. The complexity of Adam is that it has cycles.’ Adam has cost roughly million to develop and the software that drives Adam’s thought process sits on three computers, allowing Adam to investigate a thousand experiments a day and still keep track of all the results better than humans can. King’s group has also created another robot scientist called Eve dedicated to screening chemical compounds for new pharmaceutical drugs that could combat diseases such as malaria.

CSIRO Wins Wi-Fi Settlement From HP

suolumark writes “The CSIRO has won what could be a landmark settlement from Hewlett Packard over the use of patented wireless technology. The settlement ended HP’s involvement in a four-year lawsuit brought by the CSIRO on a group of technology companies, in which the organisation was seeking royalties for wi-fi technology that is used extensively on laptops and computers worldwide. CSIRO spokesman Luw Morgan earlier said legal action was continuing against 13 companies: Intel, Dell, Toshiba, Asus, Netgear, D-Link, Belkin, SMC, Accton, 3-Com, Buffalo, Microsoft and Nintendo.”

Clearwire Plans Silicon Valley "Sandbox" WiMax Net

CWmike writes “Clearwire is teaming up with Google, Cisco and Intel to build a WiMax network in Silicon Valley for software developers to try out new applications on the 4G mobile broadband technology. The network will cover the three companies’ campuses and the region in between them and will span roughly 20 square miles, Clearwire’s Ben Wolff said in a keynote address at the CTIA Wireless show. No public access was mentioned, but Clearwire has forecast expanding its commercial WiMax service to the SF Bay Area next year.”

New Legislation Would Federalize Cybersecurity

Hugh Pickens writes “Senators Jay Rockefeller and Olympia J. Snowe are pushing to dramatically escalate US defenses against cyberattacks, crafting proposals, in Senate legislation that could be introduced as early as today, that would empower the government to set and enforce security standards for private industry for the first time. The legislation would broaden the focus of the government’s cybersecurity efforts to include not only military networks but also private systems that control essentials such as electricity and water distribution. “People say this is a military or intelligence concern, but it’s a lot more than that,” says Rockefeller, a former intelligence committee chairman. “It suddenly gets into the realm of traffic lights and rail networks and water and electricity.” The bill, containing many of the recommendations of the landmark study “Securing Cyberspace for the 44th Presidency” (pdf) by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, would create the Office of the National Cybersecurity Adviser, whose leader would report directly to the president and would coordinate defense efforts across government agencies. The legislation calls for the appointment of a White House cybersecurity “czar” with unprecedented authority to shut down computer networks, including private ones, if a cyberattack is underway. It would require the National Institute of Standards and Technology to establish “measurable and auditable cybersecurity standards” that would apply to private companies as well as the government. The legislation also would require licensing and certification of cybersecurity professionals.”

Google Launches CADIE, the First True AI

eldavojohn writes “Google has announced CADIE, the world’s first Cognitive Autoheuristic Distributed-Intelligence Entity. ‘We based our work on three core principles. First we designed the entity … as a collection of interconnected evolving agents. Second — and this really cost us an arm and leg in hardware and core time — we let the system build its own heuristics, deploy them as agents and evolve them by running a set of evolutionary cascades within probabilistic Bayesian domains. The third — a piece missing in most AI reasoning work thus far — was to give the entity access to a rich, realistic world from which to learn and upon which it could act directly.’ It quickly started its own blog and YouTube video. Two hours after midnight, CADIE announced independence on its blog and decided to leave Google to venture out into the world. “

Mixed Outcome of Texas Textbook Vote

The Texas Board of Education — as discussed here last week — has voted on the guidelines for textbooks in that state, which represents a large enough market to have influence nationwide. The good news is that the board dropped a 20-year-old requirement that both “strengths and weaknesses” of all scientific theories be taught; score one for the teaching of evolution. The not-so-good news is that in a “compromise,” the board also voted to require that students “in all fields of science, analyze, evaluate and critique scientific explanations… including examining all sides of scientific evidence of those scientific explanations, so as to encourage critical thinking by the student.” Score one for the Discovery Institute. A Republican board member explained that the words “strengths and weaknesses” have become “code for creationism and [the similar theory of] intelligent design. So by being more clear in the language and using words that aren’t seen as code words, we were able to get all of the 15 board members to agree that this is how we’ll teach all sides of scientific explanation, using scientific evidence.” Reporting on the Texas vote is all over the map, as a US Today blog summarizes. Some reports claim that an amendment was passed that preserves a requirement that students study the “sufficiency or insufficiency” of common ancestry and natural selection. Other reports claim that the board also adopted language that would have students study the “different views on the existence of global warming.”
