Believable Stupidity In Game AI
Gamasutra is running a feature written by Mick West, co-founder of Neversoft, about creating game AI that is dumb enough to defeat, yet intelligent enough that its “mistakes” are similar to those a real player would make, thus preserving the illusion that the AI is not just throwing the game. “The simplest way to introduce stupidity into AI is to reduce the amount of computation that it’s allowed to perform. Chess AI generally performs billions of calculations when deciding what move to make. … The problem with this approach is that it decreases the realism of the AI player. When you reduce the amount of computation, the AI will begin to make incredibly stupid mistakes — mistakes that are so stupid, no human would ever make them. The artificial nature of the game will then become apparent, which destroys the illusion of playing against a real opponent. … By reducing the amount of computation, we create an AI opponent that is trying to win, but has been crippled in a way that leads to unrealistic gameplay.”

Dell’s Adamo Goes After MacBook Air
MojoKid writes “Adamo, pronounced ‘A-dahm-o,’ means ‘to fall in love with’ in Latin. Dell is certainly hoping you’ll fall in love with this notebook’s looks as well as its functionality. The Adamo’s chassis is milled from a single piece of aluminum and features precision detailing with a scalloped backlit keyboard. Even the fan holes, which are punched out squares, have an attractive modern design. The Adamo features a thin 0.65-inch profile and weighs four pounds. The new ultra-portable will also offer Intel Core 2 Duo processors and DDR3 memory (up to 4GB), a 13.4-inch 16:9 HD display and a 128GB SSD hard drive. Pricing starts at ,999 with Vista Ultimate 64.” The Dell infomercial spokesmodel (video at the bottom of the link) concludes, “Adamo resulted from the union of technology with pleasure for the style-conscious individualist.” OK, so he’s no Steve Jobs.

Cisco Barges Into the Server Market
mikesd81 was one of several readers to write in about Cisco’s announcement of what has been called Project California — a system comprising servers made from 64-bit Intel Nehalem EP Xeon processors, storage, and networking in a single rack, glued together with software from VMWare and BMC. Coverage of this announcement is everywhere. Business Week said: “The new device, dubbed Project California, takes servers into new territory by cramming computer power into the very box that contains storage capacity and the networking tools that are Cisco’s specialty. Cisco’s approach could help companies use fewer machines — saving money not only on hardware, but also on power and IT staffing — in building data centers. … Cisco is well-girded to take this step. It has more than billion in cash, more than any other tech company. The company is moving into no fewer than 28 different markets, including digital music in the home and public surveillance systems.” The Register provides more analysis: “Microsoft is, of course, a partner on the California system, since you can’t ignore Windows in the data center, and presumably, Hyper-V will be supported alongside ESX Server on the hypervisors. (No one at the Cisco launch answered that and many other questions seeking details). … The one thing that Cisco is clear on is who is signing off on these deals: the CIO. Cisco and its partners are going right to the top to push the California systems, right over the heads of server, storage, and network managers who want to protect their own fiefdoms.”

Intel Threatens To Revoke AMD’s X86 License
theraindog writes “AMD’s former manufacturing division opened for business last week as GlobalFoundries, but the spin-off may run afoul of AMD’s 2001 cross-licensing agreement with Intel. Indeed, Intel has formally accused AMD of violating the agreement, and threatened to terminate the company’s licenses in 60 days if a resolution is not found. Intel contends that GlobalFoundries is not a subsidiary of AMD, and thus is not covered by the licensing agreement. AMD has fired back, insisting that it has done nothing wrong, and that Intel’s threat constitutes a violation of the deal. At stake is not only AMD’s ability to build processors that use Intel’s x86 technology, but also Intel’s ability to use AMD’s x86-64 tech in its CPUs.”

New Laser System Targets Mosquitoes
An anonymous reader writes “In the Cold War the so-called ‘Star Wars defense system’ proposed using lasers to destroy incoming Soviet missiles. In a 2007 brainstorming session aimed at combating malaria, Dr. Lowell Wood, the architect of that system, proposed modifying his original idea to kill mosquitoes. The cover of today’s Wall Street Journal contains an article that highlights this initiative as well as a few others, like using a giant flashlight to disrupt mosquitoes’ vision and using the insects to vaccinate, in the war against malaria. The system is intelligent enough to avoid noncombatants like humans and butterflies and can even tell the difference between females, the blood-drinkers, and males. My favorite quote: ‘We’d be delighted if we destabilize the human-mosquito balance of power.'”

UK ISPs Could Be Forced To Block Or Restrict P2P
MJackson writes “The UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has published a draft set of proposals for tackling illegal broadband file sharing (P2P) downloads by persistent infringers, among other things. The proposals form part of a discussion piece concerning the role that a UK Digital Rights Agency (DRA) could play. UK Internet Providers will already be required to warn those suspected of such activity and collect anonymised information on serious repeat infringers, though they could soon be asked to go even further. The new discussion paper, while not going into much detail, has proposed two potential example solutions to the problem. UK ISPs could employ protocol blocking or bandwidth restrictions in relation to persistent infringers. In other words, P2P services could be blocked, or suspected users might find their service speeds seriously restricted.”

Red Hat Patenting Around Open Standards
I Believe in Unicorns writes “Red Hat’s patent policy says ‘In an attempt to protect and promote the open source community, Red Hat has elected to… develop a corresponding portfolio of software patents for defensive purposes. We do so reluctantly…’ Meanwhile, USPTO Application #: 20090063418, ‘Method and an apparatus to deliver messages between applications,’ claims a patent on routing messages using an XQuery match, which is an extension of the ‘unencumbered’ AMQP protocol that Red Hat is helping to make. Is this a defensive patent, or is Red Hat cynically staking out a software patent claim to an obvious extension of AMQP? Is Red Hat’s promise to ‘refrain from enforcing the infringed patent’ against open source a reliable contract, or a trap for the unwary? Given the Microsoft-Red Hat deal in February, are we seeing Red Hat’s ‘Novell Moment?'” Reader Defeat_Globalism contributes a related story about an international research team who conducted experiments to “quantify the ways patent systems and market forces might influence someone to invent and solve intellectual problems.” Their conclusion was that a system which doesn’t restrict prizes to the winner provides more motivation for innovation.
