An anonymous reader writes “Keir Thomas has responded to the recent raft of news stories pointing out that Linux’s share of the netbook market isn’t as rosy as it used to be. Thomas thinks the problem boils down to a combination of unfamiliar software and unfamiliar hardware, which can ‘push users over the edge.’ This accounts for the allegedly high return rates of Linux netbooks. In contrast, although far from superior, Windows provides a more familiar environment, making the hardware issues (irritatingly small keyboard, screen etc.) seem less insurmountable; users are less likely to walk away. ‘Once again Microsoft’s monopoly means Windows is swallowing up another market.'”

TechCrunch has released a few more technical details, pictures, and general comments about their CrunchPad project as a recent accidental leak saw a new round of images posted to the web. It seems that the tablet has continued to grow and evolve with the help of an Intel Atom chip (as opposed to the Via chip previously used), new software from Fusion Garage, and a bottom-up Linux install. “I wanted something I couldn’t buy, and found people who said it could be built for a lot less than I imagined. The goal — a very thin and light touch screen computer, sans physical keyboard, that has no hard drive and boots directly to a browser to surf the web. The operating system exists solely to handle the hardware drivers and run the browser and associated applications. That’s it.”

supersloshy writes “I’m a user of Ubuntu Linux and I have been for a little while now. Recently I’ve been trying to copy DVDs onto a portable media player, but everything I’ve tried isn’t working right. dvd::rip always gets the language mixed up (for example, when ripping ‘Howl’s Moving Castle,’ one of the files it ripped to was in Japanese instead of English), Acidrip just plain isn’t working for me (not recognizing a disc with spaces in its name, refusing to encode, etc.), Thoggen is having trouble with chapters (chapter 1 repeated twice for me once), and OGMRip has the audio out of sync. What I’m looking for is a reliable program to copy the movie into a single file with none of the audio or video glitches as mentioned above. Is there even such thing on Linux? If you can’t think of a decent Linux-based solution, then a Windows one is fine as long as it works.”

Barence writes “Microsoft is imploring millions of Windows 7 beta testers to perform a clean install of the forthcoming Release Candidate, rather than upgrade from the beta. ‘The reality is that upgrading from one pre-release build to another is not a scenario we want to focus on because it is not something real-world customers will experience,’ the company claims on the Engineering Windows 7 blog. Those who attempt to install the Release Candidate over the beta will find their path blocked.” I’ve read complaints that reviews of new Linux distros often focus too much on the installation process; Microsoft seems to understand that complications at installation time (dual booting? preserving an existing data partition?) can sour one’s experience pretty thoroughly.

When I logged on to the Netflix site today, it offered a film about Linux. One problem the movie can’t be viewed in Linux.

If you think that Windows now completely rules the netbook world, you’ve been drinking way too much Microsoft kool-aid according to Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu.

One of the several advantages of having many Linux distributions is that there is always one distribution that meets specific needs for a group of users with similar interests.
