Dean Kamen Awarded Patent For Robot Competition Rules

An anonymous reader writes “Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway and the founder of the FIRST Robotics Competition has been granted Patent 7,507,169, that describes one of the previous competitions. The main invention is a ranking system that ranks teams not only on their score, but their opponents’ score, so teams are rewarded for helping their opponents score more. It is claimed that this ranking system promotes the made up phrases ‘coopertition’ and ‘gracious professionalism.’ It had three rejections, and even more appeals, before finally being accepted six years after the first application. While a majority of his 130 patents are for things related to his inventions, which are as diverse as medical equipment, unique uses for Stirling engines, and transportation, this one seems a little dubious. Dean opposes the Patent Reform Act of 2009, which would make it easier to overturn patents after they are granted.”

Artificial Ethics

The book talks about artificial consciousness in a way that can be enjoyed by experts in the field or your average science fiction geek. Telepresence — Our Best Bet For Exploring Space

Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute recently wrote an opinion piece for the NY Times discussing the limitations of our space technology. He makes the harsh point that transporting human beings to other star systems isn’t a reasonable goal even on a multi-generational time frame. However, advances in robotics and data gathering could instead bring the planets and stars to us, and do it far sooner. Quoting: “Sending humans to the stars is simply not in the offing. But this is how we could survey other worlds, around other suns. We fling data-collecting, robotic craft to the stars. These proxy explorers can be very small, and consequently can be shot spaceward at tremendous speed even with the types of rockets now available. Robot probes don’t require life support systems, don’t get sick or claustrophobic and don’t insist on round-trip tickets. … These microbots would supply the information that, fed to computers, would allow us to explore alien planets in the same way that we navigate the virtual spaces of video games or wander through online environments like Second Life. High-tech masks and data gloves, sartorial accessories considerably more comfortable than a spacesuit, would permit you to see the landscape, touch objects and even smell the air.”

New CASMOBOT Lawnmower Controlled By a Wiimote

An anonymous reader writes “Researchers at the University of Southern Denmark have modified a Wiimote so that it can control an industrial lawn mower. The project is called Casmobot (Computer Assisted Slope Mowing Robot). ‘The Casmobot project is about making grass cutting more efficient,’ said Kjeld Jensen, a robotics researcher at the University of Southern Denmark who developed the system. It uses a standard Wiimote that communicates via Bluetooth to a computer and robotics module built into the mower. Actions of the mower are matched to tilt actions of the remote. For example, if you tilt the remote down the mower moves forwards; tilt it up, and it moves backwards, and so on. The Wiimote can be used to control the mower manually or in computer-assisted mode, where the mower uses autonomous navgiation based on RTK GPS positioning to cut larger areas.”

Intel Envisions Shape-Shifting Smartphones

An anonymous reader writes “It’s not sci-fi, but rather advanced robotics research which is leading Intel to envision shape-shifting smartphones. ‘Imagine what you would do with this material,’ says Jason Campbell, a senior researcher at Intel’s Pittsburgh Lab who’s working in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University. ‘If you want to carry the device, you’d make it as small as possible by making it pack itself as densely as possible. When you go to surf the Web, you’re going to make it big.’ The material being studied is transparent silicon-dioxide hemispheres, which can roll around each other under electrical control to create different shapes. The lab has built 6-inch long actuators, which it’s working to reduce to 1-mm tube-sized prototypes. When will we see a shape-shifting phone? ‘In terms of me being able to buy it, that’s a difficult forecasting problem, because I have to guess about manufacturing costs,’ Campbell said. ‘I won’t do that. But we hope the science will be proved out in three to five years.'”

Good Robot Projects For K-5?

bugs2squash writes “Some of the parents of kids at my son’s elementary school would like to set up a robotics club for the children. I see that Lego has a new line of robotics bricks called wedo (PDF) and that seems to be the path of least resistance to doing something. But I wanted to ask: What experience do all y’all have of running a robotics club for this age group (5 thru 10 years old) and what factors made it a success (or failure)? Did you use a commercial kit of parts or brew something from scratch? What kind of projects work well with kids this age? I was thinking maybe making robot flowers (yes, I know they’d all rather build robotic sharks with lasers).” (Here’s another page about Wedo.)
