supermehra writes “How do you move 300 desktops, locked down with Windows ADS Group Policies (GPO), over to Ubuntu desktop? We have tried Centrify, Likewise, Gnome Gconf, and the like. Of course, we evaluated SuSe Desktop Enterprise and RedHat Desktop. Samba 4.0 promises the server side, however nothing for desktop lockdown. And while gnome gconf does offer promise, no real tools for remotely managing 300 desktops running gnome + gconf exist. All the options listed above are expensive, in fact so expensive that it’s cheaper to leave M$ on! So while we’ve figured out the Office suite, email client, browser, VPN, drawing tools, and pretty much everything else, there seems to be no reasonable, open source alternative to locking down Linux terminals to comply with company policies. We’re not looking for kiosk mode — we’re looking for IT policy enforcement across the enterprise. Any ideas ladies & gentlemen?”

You know that Apple computers are overpriced, don’t you? The latest Mac desktop refresh brought the hardware inside new Mac desktops in line with the rest of the industry but the same cannot be said for their price points. While iMac can compete with Dell and HP all-in-ones on both specs and price, Mac mini and Mac Pro carry a hefty 40% premium.

Adobe AIR is marvelous. Simple as that. It takes either or all HTML, JavaScript, Flash or Actionscript and builds you a desktop widget that is compatible across all operating systems and can be used at any time off-line. There are very few limitations, and anyone with even a little programming knowledge could build an app with relative ease.

coondoggie writes with an excerpt from Network World: “Software that for the first time lets users run native copies of the Windows operating systems on a mainframe will be introduced Friday by data center automation vendor Mantissa. The company’s z/VOS software is a CMS application that runs on IBM’s z/VM and creates a foundation for Intel-based operating systems. Users only need a desktop appliance running Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) client, which is the same technology used to attach to Windows running on Terminal Server or Citrix-based servers. Users will be able to connect to their virtual and fully functional Windows environments without any knowledge that the operating system and the applications are executing on the mainframe and not the desktop.”

neilticktin writes “MacTech performed an exhaustive set of benchmarks comparing Parallels Desktop 4 to VMWare Fusion 2 to run Windows on a Mac. To tackle this problem, MacTech undertook a huge benchmarking project starting in December — over 2500 tests by stopwatch. The goal was to see how the recent versions of VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop performed on different levels of Mac hardware, using XP, Vista, 64-bit, multi-procs, games, etc. … As usual, results vary by what’s important to you.”

Accompanying updates to Apple’s line of desktops Tuesday is a new compact, wired keyboard with no numeric keypad. It’s included with each new iMacs by default, but can be swapped out for one that does include a numeric keypad at no additional cost (when ordering online).
