gandhi_2 writes “Sun Microsystems soared in European trading after a report that it was in talks to be acquired by IBM. The Wall Street Journal, quoting “people familiar with the matter,” reported Wednesday that International Business Machines was in talks to buy the company for at least .5 billion in cash, a premium of more than 100 percent over the company’s closing share price Tuesday. Officials of Sun and IBM could not immediately be reached for comment.”

ProgramErgoSum writes to tell us that IBM’s Indian-based research arm is trying to bring a new dimension to web interaction through voice interaction on your mobile phone. Developing a new protocol, Hyperspeech Transfer Protocol (HSTP), the hope is to allow users to talk to the web and get a response. Without more explanation I’m hoping this goes about as far as the gopher web. “The spoken web is a network of voice sites or interconnected voice and the response the company got in some pilot projects in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat and the kind of innovations that people came up with were just mind-boggling, Gupta said. “

theodp writes “Just when you thought annual reviews couldn’t get worse, BusinessWeek reports that HR departments at companies like Microsoft and IBM are starting to use mathematical analysis to determine the value of each employee. At an undisclosed Internet company, analysis of (non-verbal) communications was used to produce a circle to represent each employee — those determined to generate or pass along valuable info were portrayed as large and dark-colored circles (‘thought leaders’ and ‘networked curators’), while those with small and pale circles were written off as not adding a hell of a lot. ‘You have to bring the same rigor you bring to operations and finance to the analysis of people,’ explains Microsoft’s Rupert Bader. Hey, who could argue with what Quants did for finance?”

theodp writes “Over at IBM, the Lotus Notes team has ‘invented’ preventing the use of their own product during meetings. Self-described patent reformer Big Blue has asked the USPTO for a patent covering Suppressing De-Focusing Activities During Selective Scheduled Meetings by forcing meeting attendees to ‘submit to the computing system suspension requirements.’ What’s next — a patent for Verizon for blocking cellphone usage during movies?”

Our storage options weren’t always as fanciful, fast, and fat as they are today. Some of you may remember toting a 3.5-inch floppy to and from school, while others hearken all the way back to cassette tapes. And if you’ve lived long enough to remember the IBM Punch Card first hand, just ask and we’ll SPEAK LOUDER.

coondoggie writes with an excerpt from Network World: “Software that for the first time lets users run native copies of the Windows operating systems on a mainframe will be introduced Friday by data center automation vendor Mantissa. The company’s z/VOS software is a CMS application that runs on IBM’s z/VM and creates a foundation for Intel-based operating systems. Users only need a desktop appliance running Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) client, which is the same technology used to attach to Windows running on Terminal Server or Citrix-based servers. Users will be able to connect to their virtual and fully functional Windows environments without any knowledge that the operating system and the applications are executing on the mainframe and not the desktop.”

lou ibmix XI submitted an email written by Bill Gates a few years ago and turned over to the feds as part of the government anti trust case. Great quotes like ‘Someone decided to trash the one part of Windows that was usable?’ and ‘The lack of attention to usability represented by these experiences blows my mind.’ We like to think of him as an abstract, but I think this is interesting stuff.
