Ian Lamont writes “A Microsoft-sponsored report that describes a hidden “Apple tax” has fallen flat among the technology press. Roger Kay’s report (PDF) compares various PC and Mac configurations, and claims an all-Apple household’s costs would add up to an extra ,367 over five years. Tech columnists and bloggers have slammed the comparisons and claims made in the report — even Mac-baiter John C. Dvorak calls it propaganda. However, some Mac fans still see a pro-Microsoft press conspiracy. Even if the comparisons are questionable, Kay’s report and the accompanying television ads have clearly struck a nerve among the Mac faithful.” Meanwhile Linux users everywhere are scratching their heads.

snydeq writes “InfoWorld’s Martin Heller takes a first look at Microsoft’s Exchange Server 2010 Beta, noting several usability, reliability, and compliance improvements over Exchange 2007. Top among Exchange 2010’s new features are OWA support for Firefox 3 and Safari 3; improved storage reliability; conversation views; mail federation between trusted companies; and MailTips, a sort of Google Mail Goggles for the corporate environment. ‘Database availability groups give you redundant mail stores with continuous replication; database-level failover gives you automatic recovery. I/O optimizations make Exchange less “bursty” and better suited to desktop-class SATA drives; JBOD support lets you concatenate disks rather than stripe them into a redundant array.’ Exchange 2010 will, however, require shops to upgrade to Windows Server 2008, as support for Windows Server 2003 has been dropped. Microsoft will release technical previews of other products in the suite, including Office 2010, SharePoint Server 2010, Visio 2010, and Project 2010, in the third calendar quarter.”

pkluss noted Kevin Turner, COO of Microsoft making the proclamation that “Vista today, post-Service Pack 2, which is now in the marketplace, is the safest, most reliable OS we’ve ever built. It’s also the most secure OS on the planet, including Linux and open source and Apple Leopard. It’s the safest and most secure OS on the planet today.”

theodp writes “Gov. Christine Gregoire applauded Microsoft’s job training partnership with WA state and county government agencies, which calls for the distribution of 30,625 training vouchers statewide during the next 90 days. ‘This program [Elevate America] is all about equipping people with the new skills they’ll need to get a job in the changing economy,’ said Microsoft Counsel Brad Smith, who also made it very clear that getting ‘workforce ready’ won’t involve acquiring any Linux skills. At least this offer appears to be no-cost, unlike the Microsoft requested in an e-mail come-on for ‘The Stimulus Package for Your Career’ (so much for Smith’s and Gregoire’s war on spam).”

Olipro writes “Most enterprises stated they won’t bother with Windows 7 for at least a year as they simply continue to distrust that compatibility issues won’t occur with their mission-critical software… The Million Dollar question will be whether the fact that XP upgrades to Windows 7 requires a clean install will prove to be Microsoft’s undoing.” I suspect that will change before they actually release the OS.

theodp writes “Just three days before the Spitfire pub was to open on Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division campus, TechFlash reports that Microsoft got cold feet and pulled the plug on the project, leaving the bar’s owner and his 22 employees in the lurch. ‘I am completely stunned and disappointed by the decision,’ said now lease-less owner Jonathan Sposato, who’s stuck with space built out as a pub, complete with a giant bar, a fireplace, and eight beer taps. (He says it wouldn’t be economically viable to refit it as a restaurant.) Microsoft spokesman Lou Gellos confirmed the company’s sudden change of heart: ‘The goal was always to create a cool gathering place for employees, but to do so in a manner that’s consistent with a business environment. We decided we should do something more appropriate, and that meant not having a pub.’ The new pub had been in development for more than a year.”
