Most Digg users probably don’t think about the technology it takes tokeep Digg up and running. That’s a good thing. That means hopefullythe site always loads when you want to use it and the pages load fastenough so you don’t give up and go somewhere else.

Dell’s Adamo Goes After MacBook Air

MojoKid writes “Adamo, pronounced ‘A-dahm-o,’ means ‘to fall in love with’ in Latin. Dell is certainly hoping you’ll fall in love with this notebook’s looks as well as its functionality. The Adamo’s chassis is milled from a single piece of aluminum and features precision detailing with a scalloped backlit keyboard. Even the fan holes, which are punched out squares, have an attractive modern design. The Adamo features a thin 0.65-inch profile and weighs four pounds. The new ultra-portable will also offer Intel Core 2 Duo processors and DDR3 memory (up to 4GB), a 13.4-inch 16:9 HD display and a 128GB SSD hard drive. Pricing starts at ,999 with Vista Ultimate 64.” The Dell infomercial spokesmodel (video at the bottom of the link) concludes, “Adamo resulted from the union of technology with pleasure for the style-conscious individualist.” OK, so he’s no Steve Jobs.

Auto Safety Tech May Encourage Dangerous Driving

longacre writes “Modern highway planning schemes designed to make roads safer combined with the comfort and safety technology found in the modern automobile may actually be putting us in danger, according to a compelling piece in Popular Mechanics. Citing studies and anecdotal evidence, the article points out that a driver on a narrow mountain road will probably drive as if their life depends on it; but the same driver on an eight-lane freeway with gradual curves and little traffic may be lulled into speeding while chatting on his cellphone. Quoting: ‘Modern cars are quiet, powerful and capable of astonishing grip in curves, even on wet pavement. That’s swell, of course, until you suddenly lose traction at 75 mph. The sense of confidence bred by all this capability makes us feel safe, which causes us to drive faster than we probably should. We don’t want to make cars with poor response, but perhaps we could design cues — steering-wheel vibration devices, as in video games? — that make us feel less safe at speed and encourage more care. … In college I drove an Austin-Healey 3000 that somehow felt faster at 45 mph than my Mazda RX-8 (or even my Toyota Highlander Hybrid) feels at 75 mph. That was a good thing.'”

World-First VDSL2 Demo Gets 500Mbps Data Transfers

pnorth writes “Ericsson has achieved data transfer rates of more than 500Mbps in what it said is the world’s first live demonstration of a new VDSL2-based technology. The demonstration achieved data rates of more than 0.5 Gbps over twisted copper pairs using ‘vectorized’ VDSL2. Vectoring decouples the lines in a cable (from an interference point of view), substantially improving power management, and reduces noise originating from the other copper pairs in the same cable bundle.”

EFF Unveils Search Tool for FOIA Results

The EFF has released a beta version of a new search tool that lets you mine the documents the EFF has unearthed using FOIA requests and lawsuits over the years. Quoting: “In celebration of Sunshine Week, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) today launched a sophisticated search tool that allows the public to closely examine thousands of pages of documents the organization has pried loose from secretive government agencies. The documents relate to a wide range of cutting-edge technology issues and government policies that affect civil liberties and personal privacy.” I tried a search for “border” among the documents relating to the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement and turned up 21 results and fascinating reading.

Intel Threatens To Revoke AMD’s X86 License

theraindog writes “AMD’s former manufacturing division opened for business last week as GlobalFoundries, but the spin-off may run afoul of AMD’s 2001 cross-licensing agreement with Intel. Indeed, Intel has formally accused AMD of violating the agreement, and threatened to terminate the company’s licenses in 60 days if a resolution is not found. Intel contends that GlobalFoundries is not a subsidiary of AMD, and thus is not covered by the licensing agreement. AMD has fired back, insisting that it has done nothing wrong, and that Intel’s threat constitutes a violation of the deal. At stake is not only AMD’s ability to build processors that use Intel’s x86 technology, but also Intel’s ability to use AMD’s x86-64 tech in its CPUs.”

IBM Develops Technology To Talk To Web

ProgramErgoSum writes to tell us that IBM’s Indian-based research arm is trying to bring a new dimension to web interaction through voice interaction on your mobile phone. Developing a new protocol, Hyperspeech Transfer Protocol (HSTP), the hope is to allow users to talk to the web and get a response. Without more explanation I’m hoping this goes about as far as the gopher web. “The spoken web is a network of voice sites or interconnected voice and the response the company got in some pilot projects in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat and the kind of innovations that people came up with were just mind-boggling, Gupta said. “

Europe Is Testing 12.5 Gbps Wireless

Lorien_the_first_one brings word that in Europe, a breakthrough for post-4G communications has been announced. A public-private consortium known as IPHOBAC has been developing new communications technology that is near commercialization now. Quoting: “With much of the mobile world yet to migrate to 3G mobile communications, let alone 4G, European researchers are already working on a new technology able to deliver data wirelessly up to 12.5Gb/s. The technology — known as ‘millimeter-wave’ or microwave photonics — has commercial applications not just in telecommunications (access and in-house networks) but also in instrumentation, radar, security, radio astronomy and other fields.”

3-D Light System May Revolutionize Fingerprinting

coondoggie writes “The US Department of Homeland Security’s Science & Technology Directorate recently awarded almost 0,000 to a Kentucky company to further develop a contactless finger print/biometric system. The goal is a machine that can snap 10 fingerprints in high resolution in less than 10 seconds, without human intervention. This goal is beginning to lok feasible. FlashScan3D is working with the University of Kentucky’s Center for Visualization and Virtual Environments, and has developed a technique called ‘structured light illumination’ (WIPO patent description), where a pattern of dots or stripes is projected onto a curved or irregular surface.”
