Cable Companies Want Bigger Share of Online TV Market

commodore64_love writes with news that a number of cable companies, such as Time-Warner, Comcast, and Cox, are trying to establish themselves as content providers on the web in addition to television. They are currently negotiating with HBO, TNT, CNN, and a number of other channels to bring their programming online exclusively for cable TV subscribers. They say they’re not trying to develop “some enormous new revenue opportunity,” but rather trying to compete with sites like Hulu, which provide shows for free. “They pay networks a per-subscriber fee each month for the right to carry channels. But the cable companies have groused that they are paying for content that programmers are giving away for free on the Web. … People aren’t yet cutting the cord en masse – the Leichtman survey found that people who watch recent TV shows online every week are not more likely to give up TV service than other people. But the industry is heading off what could end up as a troubling trend. After all, the availability of free content online has befuddled other media industries, from music to newspapers. … The cable companies and others involved in the talks for a TV service said their goal isn’t to kill the online video goose, but to work out a plan that keeps everyone’s business intact.”

I do use Twitter daily, just not the Twitter site. Sometimes, I use desktop-based applications (TweetDeck and Twihrl are both favorites), and I frequently use the Web to manage my Twitter account. There are a growing number of useful applications for Twittering, and all of them do the job better than the standard Twitter interface.

Best FOSS Help Desk Software For Small Firms?

Nocts writes “I’m currently working for a moderately sized company that manages a large portion of its internal help desk questions through a Jabber-based chat room. What we’re looking for instead is an open source, preferably Web-based solution that will give us the ability to have floor representatives queue questions and concerns in a similar fashion to BugTraq, directed at the help desk. Email capability would be preferred for elaboration of specific issues, but the more we can centralize everything into the queued system the better. Any recommendations and experiences? Just about any language is doable since I have the ability to configure and upgrade our servers and we’re looking at about a user base of 100 people, with around 5-10 questions a minute.”

Motor Made From Liquid Film

KentuckyFC writes “Last year, a group of Iranian physicists made a puzzling discovery. They placed a thin film of water in a small cell and bathed it in two perpendicular electric fields. To their surprise this caused the water to rotate. They called their device a liquid film motor and posted on the web a cool set of movies showing the phenomenon. The puzzle is this: the electric fields are static, so what’s driving the motor? Now another group of physicists has the answer: a complex interaction between the electric field, the cell container and the liquid causes water to move along the cell wall. Crucially, it moves in opposite directions on opposite sides of the cell and so sets up a circular flow. The phenomenon works only when friction and surface tension are significant forces so the effect is entirely scale dependent. That’s probably why we haven’t seen it before and also why it could have important implications for microfluidic devices such as lab-on-a-chip.”

Australian Internet Censorship Plan Torpedoed

An anonymous reader writes “The Australian Government’s plan to introduce mandatory internet censorship has been scuttled, following an independent senator’s decision to join the Greens and Opposition in blocking any legislation needed to start the scheme. Anti-Gambling Senator Nick Xenophon previously supported the filter because it could also block gambling web sites, but today withdrew support saying ‘the more evidence that’s come out, the more questions there are on this.’ This week surveys found only less than 10% of Australians supported the censorship. Censorship Senator Stephen Conroy has consistently ignored advice from technical experts saying the filters would slow the internet, block legitimate sites, be easily bypassed and fall short of capturing all of the nasty content available online. Conroy expanded the list to block Adult R18+ and X18+ web sites, and this week said it would also block sites depicting drug use, crime, sex, cruelty, violence or ‘revolting and abhorrent phenomena’ that ‘offend against the standards of morality.’ Last week an anti-abortion website was added to the blacklist, and Conroy said he was considering expanding the blacklist to 10,000 sites and beyond.”
