Researchers Make Paper Speakers For LCD TVs
narramissic writes “Engineers at Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) have developed stereo speakers in paper (video) that are are well suited for thin devices like LCD TVs and will be used in cars starting next year. According to an ITworld article, ‘The special paper is made by sandwiching thin electrodes that receive audio signals and a prepolarized diaphragm into the paper structure. A special Flexpeaker adapter between the MP3 player and the speaker is used to play music through the paper.’ ITRI says it hopes in the coming year to develop a chip that will do away with the adapter and allow people to plug a digital music player directly into the speaker. ITRI is also working on wireless technologies and will show off its first Bluetooth enabled paper speaker in July.”

GE Introduces 500GB Holographic Disks
bheer writes “According to the NYTimes, at a conference next month, GE will debut their new holographic storage breakthrough — 500GB disks that will cost 10 cents a GB to produce at launch. GE will first focus on selling the technology to commercial markets like movie studios and hospitals, but selling to the broader corporate and consumer market is the larger goal.”

The Economist On Television Over Broadband
zxjio recommends a pair of articles in The Economist discussing television over broadband, and the effects of DVR use. “Cable-television companies make money by selling packages of channels. The average American household pays 0 a year for over 100 channels of cable television but watches no more than 15. Most would welcome the chance to buy only those channels they want to watch, rather than pay for expensive packages of programming they are largely not interested in. They would prefer greater variety, too — something the internet offers in abundance. A surprising amount of video is available free from websites like Hulu and YouTube, or for a modest fee from iTunes, Netflix Watch Instantly and Amazon Video on Demand. … Consumers’ new-found freedom to choose has struck fear into the hearts of the cable companies. They have been trying to slow internet televisions steady march into the living room by rolling out DOCSIS 3 at a snails pace and then stinging customers for its services. Another favorite trick has been to cap the amount of data that can be downloaded, or to charge extortionately by the megabyte. Yet the measures to suffocate internet television being taken by the cable companies may already be too late. A torrent of innovative start-ups, not seen since the dot-com mania of a decade ago, is flooding the market with technology for supplying internet television to the living room.” And from the second article on DVR usage patterns: “Families with DVRs seem to spend 15-20% of their viewing time watching pre-recorded shows, and skip only about half of all advertisements. This means only about 5% of television is time-shifted and less than 3% of all advertisements are skipped. Mitigating that loss, people with DVRs watch more television. … Early adopters of DVRs used them a lot — not surprisingly, since they paid so much for them. Later adopters use them much less (about two-thirds less, according to a recent study).”

Cable: Deep Packet Inspection is ‘good for consumers’
While the cable industry told Congress that deep packet inspection technology was great for consumers, Rick Boucher (D-VA) expressed some doubts. DPI’s “privacy intrusion potential is nothing short of frightening,” he said, as consumer groups called for a full investigation into how ISPs are using the technology.
Judge Opens Hearing On RealDVD Legal Battle
FP writes “On Friday morning, lawyers urged a federal judge to bar RealNetworks from selling software that allows consumers to copy their DVDs to computer hard drives, arguing that the Seattle-based company’s product is an illegal pirating tool. RealNetworks’ lawyers countered later in the morning that its RealDVD product is equipped with piracy protections that limits a DVD owner to making a single copy and a legitimate way to back up copies of movies legally purchased. This legal battle began with a restraining order last October which stopped the sale of RealDVD. More coverage is available at NPR. The same judge who shut down Napster is presiding over the three-day trial.” Reader IonOtter points out that later in the day, Judge Patel sealed the court after DVD Copy Control Association lawyers “argued that public testimony of aspects of the CSS copy-control technology would violate trade secrets.”

AT&T Sends Mixed Message On Behavioral Advertising
Ian Lamont writes “An advertising company that runs a ‘targeting marketplace’ and partner AT&T are playing down the telecommunications giant’s use of its services after AT&T’s chief privacy officer told a House subcommittee yesterday that the company does not engage in behavioral advertising. The AT&T executive testified (PDF) to the House of Representatives Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet that AT&T would not use behavioral advertising methods without informed customer consent. However, AudienceScience, a company that records ‘billions of behavioral events daily’ has apparently worked for AT&T since 2005. After the hearing, AudienceScience removed a client testimonial relating to AT&T from its website, so ‘all the appropriate parties [have] consistent messaging,’ its CEO said. An AT&T spokesman also said that the testimony was talking about AT&T’s role as an ISP, not an advertiser.”

Senate Bill Calls For Open Source Electronic Health Records
An anonymous reader optimistically writes that new legislation has been introduced in the Senate that would call for a nationwide adoption of electronic health records built on open source. The bill does not seek to supplant proprietary alternatives, but instead to either augment or offer a cost effective alternative. “‘We need advancements in health information technology across the board to improve the quality of care Americans receive,’ said Senator Rockefeller, Chairman of the Senate Finance Subcommittee on Health Care. ‘To make this happen, we need universal access to affordable and interoperable health information technology – from small, rural health clinics to large, urban hospitals.'”
